Spain's David Sanchez captured his
first ATP title on after defeating home favourite Marcelo Rios in the final of
the BellSouth Open by Rosen in Vina del Mar, Chile.
Sanchez rallied after dropping the first set to defeat the Chilean 1-6 6-3 6-3
in his first ever ATP final.
The 24-year-old from Zamora native became the fourth first-time winner this
year on the ATP circuit, joining Nikolay Davydenko (Adelaide), Hyung-Taik Lee
(Sydney) and Martin Verkerk (Milan).
Rios had not dropped a set en route to the final and looked well on his way to
his 19th career title after cruising through the opening set.
But Sanchez battled back to take the the final two sets to make it the fourth
time in his career that Rios has missed out on winning a title in his native
Chile after losing in the Santiago final in 1995, 1996 and 1997.
A delighted Sanchez said: "I'm very happy to win my first ATP title and want
to dedicate the win to my coach (Jose Luis Aparisi) who has been with me for a
long time and deserves the credit for this win.
"I'm sorry to beat Marcelo in his home and hope that Spain will one day give
me the support that this Chilean crowd gave Marcelo, because it's fantastic."
