Sixth-seed Roger Federer jumped to seventh place in the ATP Champions Race after defeating Czech Jiri Novak 6-4 6-1 3-6 6-4 in the final of the CA Tennis Trophy in Vienna on Sunday.

Federer won his third title of the year from his fifth final having already triumphed in Sydney and Hamburg.

"It was an unbelievable week, I'm overwhelmed," he said. "I'm so happy to win here in Vienna; the city is so nice and the crowd is so great. To me this tournament is very special.

"It was a very tough match. I knew I had to play a great match and I played my best tennis. I was lucky on the match point but I think I deserved to win."

The Swiss number one, who is now 10-2 since snapping his mid-year slump at the US Open, dedicated the victory to his former coach Peter Carter, who died in a car accident earlier in the year.

"This title is for him. I miss him a lot," he added.

Federer, who started the week in 10th place in the ATP Champions Race, is 13-3 in Vienna during the past four years.

Novak, who had fallen at the semi-final stage six times this year, was appearing in his first ATP final of the season. He remains in 11th position in the Race, but is now just seven points behind 10th-placed Andy Roddick.

"I'm very happy to have reached the final here," Novak said. "He was the better player today.

"He was leading the match all the time. He played excellent tennis at the end of the first set and in the second set.

"I tried to fight and keep my concentration. I was playing very solid tennis. I was confident and hitting the ball well. I had so many chances but I wasn't lucky."
