Guillermo Canas capped one of the best weeks of
his career with a straight-sets victory over 12th-seed Andy Roddick to capture
his first Masters Series title in Toronto.
The 24-year-old Argentinian made the best of his break point chances to post a
6-4 7-5 victory over the promising young American.
Canas converted the second of three break chances in the first set at 4-4,
then served out the set.
Roddick, who is 20 on August 30, bounced back in the second game of the second
set and held serve at love for a 2-1 lead.
The Argentine battled back and broke to love to go up 6-5, serving out the
match with three aces and a finishing volley.
Roddick and Canas are the top two players in match wins on the ATP Tour this
year. Canas improved to 43-19 with a 16-5 mark on hard courts while Roddick fell
to 44-14, 26-7.
Canas captured his third career title and second this season after beginning
the year with a victory at Chennai.
He concluded a tremendous run here, posting four victories over top-10
players, including a tough three-set triumph over third seed Tommy Haas in
Saturday's semi-finals.
The only player on the ATP Tour this year to defeat four top-10 players at the
same event, Canas ousted second seed Marat Safin, fifth seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov
and 10th seed Roger Federer.
The only unseeded player he faced this week was Thai qualifier Paradorn
Srichapan in the opening round.
Canas was the third unseeded player in as many years to play in the final at
this event, following Israel's Harel Levy and Romania's Andrei Pavel.
