Gaston Gaudio continued his excellent clay-court form by
claiming his second title in as many weeks with a 6-2 6-3 victory over fourth
seed Jarkko Nieminen in the Mallorca Open.
Gaudio, seeded eight, is now on a 13-match winning streak after capturing the
ATP Tour event in Barcelona seven days ago to claim his first title.
"I'm a little bit surprised to have won two weeks in a row, but I'm really,
really happy," said Gaudio.
"I was really nervous yesterday in the semi-finals which really affected my
movement. But today I was a little bit faster."
The 23-year-old Gaudio, who now is 16-1 on clay this season, claimed the
impressive scalps of Fernando Vicente, Cedric Pioline, top seed Gustavo Kuerten
and fellow countryman Agustin Calleri en route to the final.
Nieminen, meanwhile, admitted his opponent was too good for him on the day.
"I wasn't surprised by the way Gaudio was playing," said Nieminen, who lost his
first five matches of the year.
"I saw Gaudio in Barcelona and then in Mallorca and he was playing so well.
Maybe he is the best clay-court player on tour right now.
"He has no weaknesses. He is solid from the baseline and can produce winners
with both the backhand and the forehand. He is very talented."
