Andre Agassi claimed the Nasdaq-100 Open title after an
enthralling 6-3 6-3 3-6 6-4 victory over Switzerland's Roger Federer.
The American won the first two sets with relative ease before the 20-year-old
from Basle staged a comeback to win the third and take an early break in the
fourth.
But Agassi showed all his experience and considerable determination to break
back and then take the match as Federer served at 5-4 down.
The victory means the 31-year-old from Las Vegas has won the Miami tournament a record five times.
The result had looked in the balance when Federer served for a 5-3 lead in the fourth set.
Agassi broke the Swiss though to level it at 4-4 and found new depths of
reserve to breeze through his next service game with the assistance of two
aces.
Federer crumbled under the pressure, dropping his next service game, to succumb
to his third defeat in three meetings with the former world number one.
Agassi's win enabled him to become just the ninth man in ATP history to
register 700 match victories.
The first two sets went the American's way as Federer struggled to cope with
Agassi's power from the back of the court.
Agassi broke three times in the first compared to Federer's one as his famed
return of serve found top gear.
Federer tightened up his delivery in the second but was still unable to prevent
Agassi breaking once to take a commanding two-sets-to-love lead.
The nature of the match changed dramatically in the third, Agassi visibly
wilting as the younger man seemed to move up a level.
The 20-year-old gained his first break since the second game of the first set
to grab a 3-1 lead and backed it up by winning his own serve to take the set
6-3.
Federer's rise continued with an early break at 1-1 and he looked reasonably
comfortable until Agassi's late rally.
The veteran restored parity and then broke Federer again to claim an impressive
victory.
