Thomas Enqvist showed no ill effects of a
hectic last 10 days as he defeated Frenchman Nicolas Escude in Marseille to
take the Open 13 title.
The Swede, who won both his singles matches in the Davis Cup success over Great
Britain last weekend, could have been forgiven for feeling the strain after
Escude edged a tight first set on the tie-break.
But it was the Frenchman, a Davis Cup hero himself in France's 2001 triumph,
who wilted from there on as Enqvist raised as his game and clinched a 6-7 (4-7)
6-3 6-1 win.
It was his third Open 13 title and should ensure a marked rise in his Champions
Race placing on Monday.
"I love this court," said Enqvist.
"It was a tough match today.
"He was serving great - first and second serves - in the first two sets at least.
"Once I started to read his serve, the match turned
in my favour."
