German Rainer Schuttler won the second ATP title
of his career on Sunday when he beat Michel Kratochvil in straight sets at the
Heineken Open.
Schuttler, whose only previous tournament victory was in Doha in 1999, defeated
his Swiss opponent 6-3 6-4 in 96 minutes in Shanghai.
The two players practised together on a number of occasions this week and
25-year-old Schuttler, the second seed, said: "It was very important to win the
first set. I made an early break and I was always a step ahead.
"I played pretty well today. I played two very solid sets and I felt pretty
confident on the court.
"The first day I came here, I felt like I was at home. It has been an amazing
week and I am definitely going to come back.
"I've been sightseeing and last night I took a boat trip on the river, where
there was an amazing view."
Schuttler and Kratochvil, the third seed, practised together on a number of
occasions this week.
Kratochvil said: "I threw everything at him and he was just a little better than
me today.
"I was nervous for my first final, but not as nervous as I thought I'd be. I
didn't play too badly but he was very solid.
"He had trouble when I came to the net and I probably should have attacked more."
Byron Black and Thomas Shimada took the doubles crown after winning 6-2 3-6 7-5
against John-Laffnie De Jager and Robbie Koenig.
