Despite being ranked outside the world’s top 32, Joe Swail has achieved what only seven others have done this season – win a tournament. He won the Irish Professional Championship, beating Ken Doherty 9-7 in the final.
In fact, Joe Swail also holds the distinction of winning the most matches during the 2005/06 season.
Aside from the Malta Cup, the Northern Irishman has won every first-round match.
However, despite his phenomenal consistency, with the exception of his win in a limited field, he has not got beyond the quarter-final stage of any tournament.
He managed to reach the last eight of the Northern Ireland Trophy and the China Open.
It would have been a great travesty had Swail failed to reach the final stages of the World Championship after his play throughout the entire season.
But at 7-3 down to Barry Pinches in Prestatyn last month, that scenario looked a distinct probability.
However, just as he has done throughout his impressive career, the 36-year-old fought back and won 10-8. Having missed out last year, he will be keen to put up a bold show and despite a tough draw against Crucible specialist Matthew Stevens, the double semi-finalist will be confident of at least one victory.
Prediction: Second-round exit
