FU CLOSES IN ON LAST EIGHT
By PA Sport Staff
Marco Fu was determined not to be considered a one-match wonder after his shock
victory over world number one Ronnie O'Sullivan.
And Alan McManus is finding to his cost that the 25-year-old from Hong Kong is
well capable of causing another upset after he roared into a 10-6 lead on Sunday.
Fu needs to win three of Monday's final nine frames to prevent Glaswegian
McManus becoming the third Scot to qualify for the quarter-finals.
Fu has been in front since he shrugged off McManus' confident start during
Saturday's opening session when the world number 15 made breaks of 99 and 127.
Fu, the top Asian player after the decline of Thailand's James Wattana,
resumed on Sunday night with a 5-3 lead.
The subsequent eight frames were all keenly contested with tactical play to
the fore.
McManus won two of the first three frames to trail only 6-5 but Fu dominated
the rest of the session, preventing McManus closing to 8-7 by potting the last
pink.
