Williams eyes an opening.
WILLIAMS OVERCAME SHAKY START
Mark Williams overcame a shaky beginning to his second-round game with Quinten
Hann to also establish a 6-2 overnight cushion.
Williams is playing for a quarter-final place against seven-times world
champion Stephen Hendry in a game which will have a major bearing on who
finishes number one in the rankings at the end of the season.
Welshman Williams defeated Hann 10-9 at The Crucible in 1998 after which he
accused the Aussie's fans of poor sportsmanship.
But for the opening two frames today, the Melbourne professional was on top.
He made a 22 clearance to claim the first frame and potted blue and pink to
double his advantage.
However, that proved to be his last success of the afternoon as Williams
secured six frames without reply, with Hendry an interested on-looker in the
press room.
The left-hander's best break was 81 in frame seven and he also produced runs
of 52 and 60, though there's plenty of room for improvement in the final two
sessions.
The game resumes tomorrow morning with Williams requiring seven of the
remaining 17 frames to set up a mouth-watering encounter against Hendry in the
last eight.
