Marco Fu proved his first round win over Ronnie O'Sullivan was no fluke by taking a 5-3 overnight lead over Alan McManus at the Crucible.

Fu, the world number 27 from Hong Kong, made a poor start and dropped the opening two frames to a player who required an unscheduled third session to defeat Nigel Bond in his first game.

However, the 25-year-old was in better mood as he levelled by the mid-session interval, including a 73 clearance after being 45-0 down in frame three.

McManus, a first-round faller in the past two seasons, showed better form to produce a 127 clearance to regain the lead at 3-2.

However, Fu knocked in a hat-trick of 40-plus breaks to take the last three frames.

The duo have met on four previous occasions and every time the match has gone to a decider.

So, 32-year-old McManus will not be unduly concerned when the game resumes on Sunday night.
