Sean Storey wrote another happy chapter in his fairytale season to reach round
two. The world number 82 from Grimsby defeated Joe Perry 10-4 to chalk up the
28th victory of his season.
Storey, the lowest ranked professional at Sheffield, now faces John Higgins or
Ian McCulloch for a place in the quarter-finals.
Guaranteed a career-best pay cheque of #22,000, success has come late in his
career for the 31-year-old.
``If you keep winning the confidence grows and you expect to win instead of
just going out to play,'' said Storey who had no problems turning a 6-3
overnight score into his first ever Sheffield success.
``What's my secret? It's just about having a positive frame of mind.
``I now believe I can win and I realise I have been languishing too low down
in the rankings for too many years.
``But it's my own fault,'' he admitted as Perry became the second top 16 seed
to bite the dust on day two of the championship.
``I did things all wrong in the first few years I became a professional,''
added Storey, a member of the paid ranks since 1991.
``I used to go out drinking and not bother practising. Now, I don't drink,
apart from the odd glass of wine, and I practise when I should.
``A friend of mine has always believed I had the talent - I just wished I had
believed him a bit sooner.
``I played Joe Swail on my Crucible debut a couple of years ago. But I was in
awe of the place and didn't play too well.
``This time I felt a lot more comfortable and it made a big difference.''
