SHEFFIELD TO STAY AS HOST CITY
The Embassy World Championship will be staying at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre
until at least 2005.
The Crucible, home to the game's biggest event since 1977, will continue to
host the tournament until 2005 and World Snooker chief executive Richard Relton
has not ruled out the possibility of staying in Sheffield beyond that.
"The World Championship has become synonymous with Sheffield so we are
delighted the tournament is to continue at the Crucible," said Relton.
"I am sure we will be opening up discussions with Sheffield City Council with
a view to extending our stay here further."
It had been suggested the 900-seater venue was too small to host the sport's
top competition.
But Relton added: "This tournament and this venue is more than just about
maximising ticket receipts. It's unique and you have only got to talk to the
players to find out how much they cherish playing in the Crucible."
