World ranking: 4
Crucible best: Final 2013
Barry Hawkins may have lost season's world championship final 18-12 to the mercurial Ronnie O'Sullivan, but the grit and determination he showed against arguably the best player the game has ever produced won him many plaudits.
To play and more importantly compete on snooker's biggest stage was a remarkable achievement for a player who had previously only shown glimpses of his talent before finally showing that he belonged among the world's best.
A solid season has seen him rise up the rankings to a career-best world number four, thanks to reaching the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters and Welsh Open.
He also won the Players Tour Championship Finals in Preston, with a 4-0 victory over friend and practice partner Gerard Greene, to claim his second ranking title.
Hawkins is a prolific break builder but perhaps his greatest strength is his tenacity which should stand him in good stead in the longer matches at the Crucible.
The Essex man would dearly like another run to the final - but this time the aim will be to go one better and he has the game to do it.
