It is something of a surprise that Mark Selby arrives at the final tournament of the season without having lifted a trophy.
As a result, he has lost his world number one status despite reaching the final of the UK Championship where he was beaten 10-7 by current No 1 Neil Robertson.
However, there was some consolation for the Leicester cueman whose 147 break in the semi-finals - snooker's 100th officially recognised maximum break in professional competition - earned him a total of £59,000.
As defending champion, Selby also got to the final of the Masters where he lost to Ronnie O'Sullivan and the World Open where he was beaten 10-6 by Shaun Murphy.
Three finals and a semi-final appearance in the Australia Goldfields Open would go down as a successful season for many, but Selby will still be doing all he can to get his hands on some silverware.
He has not fulfilled his potential as yet at the Crucible with a final appearance in 2007 - losing to John Higgins - his best effort so far, but it can only be a matter of time before this smart operator proves himself on the biggest stage.
