Former bank clerk Chris Small opened his Crucible account in 1992 - his first season as a professional - but then had to wait seven years to get back to Sheffield.

He beat Anthony Hamilton 10-9 in the first round of the 1999 Embassy World Championship and then gave John Parrott a major scare in the second round before going down 13-12.

“Chris just won’t let go,” said Parrott of his opponent.

Small qualified for the Crucible again in 2000 by overcoming Paul Davies 10-6 in the final qualifying round but was beaten 10-8 by Fergal O’Brien in the first round proper.

Winner of the Benson and Hedges Championship in 1992, Small has yet to reach the final of a world ranking tournament.

He was beaten at the semi-final stage of the 1995 Regal Welsh and the 1998 Grand Prix.
