Judd Trump defeated fellow Englishman Mark Selby to win the China Open in Beijing.

The 21-year-old Bristolian registered a first ranking tournament success with a 10-8 victory at the Students University Stadium.

He knocked in a 104 break in the opening frame and held his nerve from there on in to defeat world number four Selby.

The 21-year-old won the opening frame with a break of 104 before Selby levelled matters with an 88 in the second.

The third frame was a much scrappier affair with the emphasis on safety exchanges, but Trump finally took it 76-46 after more than 45 minutes.

He also claimed the next to take a 3-1 lead into the mid-session interval, but Selby reduced the deficit again when the match resumed.

Selby looked set to make it 3-3 when he led 53-14 in the sixth frame, but a poor safety shot let Trump in for a break of 55 to move 4-2 ahead.

That became 5-2 when Trump made the most of Selby unfortunately going in-off in the top pocket after potting a red, but the Bristol cueman then let the final frame of the session slip from his grasp.

Leading 65-4, Trump missed a simple red into the corner pocket and Selby stepped in with a superb clearance to snatch the frame 66-65 and trail by just two frames going into the evening session.

Trump went 6-3 ahead with a break of 64 but Selby responded with an impressive 132 to reduce the deficit to two again - and a 66 in the next gave him the frame.

The Bristolian regained the initiative with a break of 113 in nine minutes but back came Selby in a game of impressive break-building with a knock of 134.

Trump edged the next but Selby won the next frame with a 124 and squared the match at 8-8 to set up an intriguing finish.

Both players had chances in a tense 17th frame but Selby was left needing two snookers with only 18 left on the table and he failed to get them, leaving Trump just a frame away from the title.

The 27-year-old 'Jester from Leicester' looked like forcing a deciding frame until he missed a brown off the spot with a 41-point advantage. That proved to be his last shot of the tournament as Trump held his nerve, sinking a match-winning pink to end Selby's hopes of a first major title since the Welsh Open three years ago.

"My career starts now," said a delighted Trump. "The last four or five years have been a steep learning curve and just prepared me for this moment.

"It's an unbelievable feeling and it's come out of nowhere as I've never shown any form this season.

"Every time I got to a venue I was preparing myself to come home early, that's the lack of confidence I had.

"Against Marco Fu (in the first round) I doubted myself so much just wondering if I was any good and if I would win. But as I got through every match I felt better and better so hopefully I can go on to win a lot more tournaments."
