DALE TOASTS HIS SHANGHAI SURPRISE

Dominic Dale toasted success on Sunday night after he was crowned the new £250,000 Roewe Shanghai Masters champion with a deserved 10-6 victory over Ryan Day.

The Welshman produced an amazing comeback to stun his fellow countryman in this year's final at the 8,000-seater Grand Stage venue.

Trailing 6-2 to his regular practice partner, Dale was unstoppable in the concluding evening session of the pair's best-of-19 frame battle.

He opened with a tournament high break of 143 - and never looked back to reel off a staggering eight frames on the spin to land this year's £48,000 winners' cheque.

The new provisional world number 16 - who moves up 16 places in the provisional world rankings - also pocketed £2,000 for his high break, which bettered Ian McCulloch's 133 break against former world champion Shaun Murphy in the first round.

"I was a bit down when Ryan went 6-3 up, but I just kept telling myself that I could come back," said Dale, who had match breaks of 54, 84 and 143.

"I felt really good throughout the match, but I knew I had to play well because Ryan is such a good player.

"He deserved to be 6-3 up after the afternoon session, but I never dreamed that I could have produced a comeback like that. It's all a bit of a blur!"

Day managed to score just 71 points in the last eight frames of the match as Dale delighted his fans to win his second ranking event crown.

"I've played really well this week, but when Ryan went 6-3 up I started to worry," admitted Dale.

"If it had gone 7-2 to him it would have been a long way back for me from then.

"But I'm here 10 years after winning my first title - and I think it means so much to me. I'm still competing with the best players."

Day, beaten in last season's Malta Cup - his first ranking event final - moves up four places in the provisional rankings to number 10. He also takes home a runners-up cheque of £22,500.

"I was very comfortable in the afternoon session, but Dominic had his 143 break in the first frame tonight and that settled him," said Day.

"The balls went his way, but it was a great comeback.

"He ended on a high note this afternoon and then played very well tonight. I still felt comfortable, but I couldn't settle for some reason."

Despite defeat the 27-year-old was able to take the positives from some impressive performances on foreign soil.

"It's been a good week and I've won a lot of matches," added Day who pocketed match breaks of 105, 115, 76, 74 and 59.

"Hopefully I can build on what I've started here this week."
