DAZZLING DING DENIES DAVIS

Steve Davis suffered a 10-6 defeat to rising star Ding Junhui as his 100th career final ended in disappointment at the Travis Perkins UK Championship in York.

The 48-year-old, who was aiming to capture the crown for a seventh time, had no answer to a superb all-round performance from a player 30 years his junior.

While the six-times former world champion had rediscovered the magic of his 1980s heyday with fine victories over title-holder Stephen Maguire, Ken Doherty and Stephen Hendry, this was one match too far and having trailed 5-3 after the first session, Davis struggled badly on the resumption in the evening.

Ding, the world number 62 who won the China Open as a wild-card entrant last season, is being tipped as someone who could dominate the game like Davis once did, and he produced some fantastic break-building and tactical awareness that was beyond his 18 years.

His excellent safety play was evident in frame nine when the 'Nugget' was called for six misses trying to clip a red on the top cushion, and he conceded 33 points in fouls to go 6-3 down.

And there was no way back as the unflappable Shanghai youngster, never truly tested in six matches at the tournament, went from strength to strength in becoming the first non-British or Irish competitor to win snooker's second most prestigious ranking event.

The last vestige of real hope for Davis disappeared in frame 11 after he had reduced his arrears to 6-4. On a break of 39, the world number 15 missed when trying to force the blue into a middle pocket, letting in Ding for a 77 break which extended his advantage to three frames.

The cushion became four at the interval thanks to a run of 78, and although frame-winning contributions of 74 and 72 showed Davis was still capable of scoring heavily, they merely delayed the inevitable.

His hopes were finally extinguished when he failed to get the snooker he needed on the pink in frame 16 and the teenager - the second youngest player after Ronnie O'Sullivan in 1993 to win this competition - was handed the title when Davis could not avoid potting the penultimate colour.
