Ronnie O'Sullivan launched a stirring comeback in Cardiff to deny Steve Davis his first ranking title in nine years.
Davis looked set to clinch the Welsh Open when he led 8-5 but O'Sullivan won the last four frames to land the £52,000 top prize a 9-8 winner.
Davis threatened to race away with the final as he opened a shock 4-1 lead.
A 40 clearance in the opening frame, followed runs of 74 and 42 carried the 46-year-old 3-0 ahead.
O'Sullivan claimed the fourth with a break of 58 but lost the fifth when Davis doubled the final black the full length of the table after fluking the pink.
Davis was looking good for 5-1 as well but O'Sullivan potted a great long red and dished up to close to 4-2 before ending the session with back to back centuries of 125 and 139 to leave the match all square.
He looked certain to lead for the first time when he made a break of 62 in the first of the evening but Davis laid a difficult snooker on the yellow and O'Sullivan failed to escape.
Davis coolly cleared the colours and then made it 6-4 with a run of 66 after O'Sullivan had carelessly gone in-off.
O'Sullivan rediscovered his touch to fly through the next with a 103 break but he needlessly went in-off again midway through the 12th frame and Davis fashioned a superb 53 clearance, in which he brought two reds off the side
cushion, to enter the last interval leading 7-5.
His lead was increased to 8-5 when O'Sullivan conceded trailing by only five points with the colours remaining after missing a blue.
But O'Sullivan regained his composure to fire in a 118 break in only five and a half minutes and recovered from 0-40 with a run of 77 to close to 8-7.
And O'Sullivan produced a steely 48 clearance to take the final its full distance before winning a nervy decider in five scoring visits.
