A former rugby league star with the Brisbane Broncos in Australia's NRL competition, Thorn also represented Queensland and Australia in that code.

Although born in New Zealand, he moved to Queensland as a youngster, ending up playing nine rugby league Tests for Australia before moving back to the country of his birth to play union.

His first season in Super 12 went so well he was selected for the All Blacks' end-of-season tour, but he then pulled out so he could make a decision on his future.

He then sat 2002 out, but has made an excellent return in 2003, winning his first cap in June this year in the game against Wales.

At 6ft 4in Thorn has the ideal physique for a forward, and he is expected to be pushing for a place in the starting line-up at lock.
