Tom Smith scored the crucial try just two minutes from time as Scotland scraped into the World Cup quarter-finals in Sydney on Saturday.
Smith's close-range effort and Chris Paterson's conversion gave Ian McGeechan's side a 22-20 victory after they'd looked booked for an early flight home.
Two tries from Rupeni Caucau and the boot of Nicky Little had given the Fijians a 20-15 lead inside the final five minutes.
But with only 14 men on the field they couldn't hold the Scottish pack and Smith plunged over to send their fans inside Aussie Stadium wild with delight. The Scots had been criticised strongly for their early performances in the tournament, but knew that victory or even a draw here would assure qualification for the last eight from Pool B.
But they struggled to fashion scoring opportunities early and it was only the boot of Paterson which kept them in with a chance of victory.
Caucau scored the first try after 11 minutes and his second, four minutes
before the break, torpedoed a Scottish revival built on solid scrumming and two
penalties by Paterson.
Scotland, trailing 14-6, clawed their way back into contention after the interval thanks to two more Paterson penalties.
And his third of the half gave them a 15-14 lead with signs the tide might be turning significantly.
But with 15 minutes remaining the Scots were penalised and Little - who had earlier converted Caucau's two tries - booted the penalty to inch Fiji ahead 17-15.
When Little struck again inside the final 10 minutes it was 20-15 and Scotland appeared to be on the way out.
But then Smith made his timely intervention and Paterson converted to clinch victory.
