Fiji coach Mac McCallion has brought back superstar winger Rupeni Caucau after
suspension to face Scotland in Sydney on Saturday 1 but dropped the man who
replaced him so brilliantly for two games.
Caucau's suspension, for striking Olivier Magne in Fiji's tournament opener
against France, expired in time for the Auckland-based star to play against
Scotland and he is straight back into the starting line-up.
"He knows that he has to play very well on Saturday, and we are expecting a
big one from him. He owes the team one and he knows that and he's stated
that," said McCallion after naming his team to play the Scots.
"We've had no problems at training. He trained exceptionally well at the
last couple of trainings so I'm more than happy."
But his recall is at the expense of Filimoni Delesau, who took Caucau's empty
wing spot and provided much of Fiji's line-breaking brilliance against the
United States and Japan.
The key to Delesau dropping to the bench is the form of Epeli Ruivadra at
centre.
With Caucau inevitably reclaiming one wing place and Ruivadra ousting Aisea
Tuilevu in the centres, McCallion has opted to keep Tuilevu in the starting 15
by moving him to the right wing.
"That was a really hard decision to make, but Epeli Ruivadra has stepped up
and Tui looks like his work rate on the wing is greater than it is at centre,"
said McCallion.
"It took a long time to come to that decision and to have two fine wingers
in Marika Vunibaka, who is not even on the bench, and Delesau, who is on the
bench, is not a bad selection to have.
"This is the best team that I believe we could put out for Saturday."
McCallion has made a total of six changes to his starting 15 from the team
which beat Japan, including a new locking combination and injury-influenced
alterations at blindside flanker, scrum-half and fly-half.
Nicky Little returns in the number 10 jersey for Waisale Serevi, who broke
his collarbone against Japan, although McCallion claimed he would have made the
change anyway.
Moses Rauluni is back at scrum-half as Sami Rabaka is injured, while Vula
Maimuri claims the blindside spot because of the injury to Alivereti Mocelutu.
"Every time Vula has come on as an impact player he has made some impact,"
said McCallion.
"This time I've told him I'm giving him the opportunity to start and I just
want him to go hard out.
"We need to pressure Scotland early on and force them into some errors and
hopefully with his experience and his hardness and his attitude then he could
upset some of their loosies."
McCallion admitted he was surprised Scotland opted to select Chris Paterson at
fly-half, with Gregor Townsend shifting into the centres.
"It's made us think about the way they are going to play the game now and
we've talked about that and we'll talk about it again," he said.
"We'll have two different game plans. We think it is going to have a bearing
on the way they are going to play.
"We thought they were going to play a kicking game, but I can see now by the
move that they have made that they are going to try and run it and play more of
an attacking game than a kicking game, but we're prepared for both."
