CLARK TARGETS VICTORY

By Gareth Duggan, PA Sport

Canada coach David Clark believes victory over Tonga would turn the team's World Cup into a success after three consecutive defeats.

Canada have lost to Wales, Italy and New Zealand during the tournament, leaving them second from bottom in Pool D.

Tonga are bottom due largely to the 91-7 thrashing they suffered at the hands of the All Blacks.

Clark believes the match against Tonga represents a chance for redemption.

"A win against Tonga would rescue that," said Clark, although he defended his team's record.

"Despite what people feel about Canada losing three games - maybe it's not the correct thing to say - but we were never going to beat the All Blacks.

"I don't think anyone is going to beat the All Blacks because I think they are going to win the championship."

But he knows he has his work cut out against a Tongan side able to cause damage from all areas of the pitch.

"They can turn, in an instant, a problem into some kind of an advantage," said Clark.

"Their force, their power, they seem to have an inherent quality that comes from the islands. We've proved in this World Cup that we've got the stiffness to match that."

The match will be Clark's last in control of Canada, and he is keen to see his charges produce an entertaining match as a farewell.

"We want to put the ball wide, play with more width. We've asked the number 10 and 12 to play that way."

Clark has made seven changes to the team, which will be led by Al Charron in his record-equalling 25th appearance as captain.

Oak Bay Wanderers' Garth Cooke comes in for Jon Thiel at tighthead prop, with Thiel returning home to be with his pregnant wife.

Tonga welcome back skipper Inoke Afeaki as one of 10 changes to the team who lost to New Zealand.

Afeaki missed the match because of a knee injury sustained in Tonga's opening match against Italy.

Number eight Benhur Kivalu and tighthead prop Heamani Lavaka are the only survivors of that match in the pack, while halves Silio Martens and Pierre Hola remain as the islanders' creative force and John Payne retains his place at inside centre.
