Canada captain Al Charron expects to face a tremendous challenge against Tonga when the two sides meet in their final Pool D match in Wollongong.

Charron, who will equal the Canadian record by captaining the Test side for the 25th time, believes the strong running of the Tongans is likely to be his team's biggest problem on Wednesday.

"They're very hard to tackle and very hard to bring down in the tackle for us," said Charron, who has 75 caps and is the oldest and most experienced player in the Canadian squad.

"We really need to be at the top of our game, so that means solid defence.

"But we also need to execute with the ball."

Coach David Clark has made seven changes to his team after the 19-14 loss to Italy in Canberra on October 21 and is determined to finish the tournament and his coaching tenure on a high.

"We have started to build a resolve in the team that means we want to end with a win," he said.

"We were very close against Italy, should have been closer against Wales and we've been the closest to date against the All Blacks," he said.

"I think this match will be close again, another struggle. I hope it'll be a more than a reasonable result for Canada."

Clark's changes include a new tighthead prop in Oak Bay Wanderers' Garth Cooke. He comes in for Jon Thiel, who has returned home to be with his pregnant wife.

Tonga coach Jim Love has made 10 changes to his starting line-up after the 91-7 loss to New Zealand in Brisbane on Friday.

Captain Inoke Afeaki returns after missing the last two matches with a knee injury and will be part of a pack which bears little resemblance to that which faced the All Blacks.

Only number eight Ben Hur Kivalu and tighthead prop Heamani Lavaka will pack up from that match - while John Payne is the solitary survivor among the three-quarter line. Half-backs Sililo Martens and Pierre Hola have both kept their places.

The match is the fifth between the two sides, with honours even so far, although Canada won the last encounter 29-11 in Vancouver in 2000.

Neither side can reach the quarter-finals, and the loser will finish bottom of Pool D.
