ITALY v WALES MIN-BY-MIN

By Reece Killworth

RESULT: ITALY 15 WALES 27

80 min: Italy win good line-out ball and look for a late consolation score. The Welsh defence holds firm, though, and the referee calls a halt to proceedings.

80 min: Free-kick to Wales as Italy transgress at the scrum. Stephen Jones lumps the ball into touch down the left as the seconds tick away.

79 min: Dallan bursts forward after the ball is recycled quickly and cleanly. He gets to within five metres of the line before it comes back inside. The ruck is formed but Troncon knocks it on as he tries to gather.

78 min: Free-kick to Italy as Wales lose their bindings at the scrum. Troncon taps and goes.

77 min: Penalty to Italy on their own 10m which Troncon taps and goes. That sees him move to the Wales 10m line and his support is there quickly. Wales stand firm in defence, though, and Charvis gets a hand in. Italy have done enough to convince the referee that the put-in should be theirs.

77 min: Harris again misses the penalty, sliding it across the left of the posts.

76 min: Penalty to Italy as Parisse holds on in the tackle. Great work from Wales as they isolate the Italian forward and get numbers there.

75 min: Wakarua blasts the ball downfield but Harris is there and pumps it back into Italian territory.

74 min: A kick over the top from Stephen Jones drifts over the tryline and Italy get the 22 drop-out.

73 min: Charvis does superbly to pick off a kick ahead from Stoica on the Italian 22. He just spills it forward in the contact, though, so it's Italy's put-in at the scrum.

73 min: Wales win the scrum well and it's flicked into Stephen Jones' path. He opts for a drop at goal but just fades the kick across the posts.

72 min: Wales bring Jonathan Thomas on for Cockbain.

71 min: Harris fails to slot over the penalty and Italy break forwards. Stephen Jones hoists over a kick for namesake Mark to chase. The ball is lost forward in the tackle by the Italians so it'll be Wales' put-in at the scrum.

70 min: Wales again get the drive on and draw a penalty from Italy at the scrum. Harris immediately points at the posts.

69 min: Cockbain wins the line-out but Cooper spills it forward as he tries to gather.

68 min: Wales get a great shove on from the Italy scrum, but Parisse is alert enough to pick up and go. It's worked back to Wakarua and he finds touch down the right.

67 min: Wales work it well from the line-out before coming back on the inside back to where their forwards are. Great hands from Harris but Mark Jones can only knock forward with the tryline gaping.

66 min: Italy can't take advantage of the attacking opportunity as they are pinged for holding on to the ball in the tackle. Stephen Jones steps forward and pumps the ball into touch down the left.

65 min: Free-kick to Italy as Wales push to early at the scrum.

64 min: CONVERSION - HARRIS. Harris adds the extras.

63 min: TRY - DAFFYD JONES. Wales go to the back of the line and get the rolling maul going five metres out. They peel away to the left through a gaping hole in the Italy defence and Daffyd Jones is the man with the ball in his hand as they power over.

62 min: Wales get the drive on and as Parisse has to go down the blind side, the tacklers are there to drive him over the touchline.

61 min: Much better control from Wales in the scrum and they are able to work it down the blind side. Mark Jones is on the burst and flicks it inside to Gareth Thomas in support. He can only knock on. Scrum to Italy 10m from their own line.

61 min: Good crisp ball from the line-out for Wales but they have a pass knocked down with Parker looking to gather it in the line. It's not a deliberate knock forward, though, so it'll only be a scrum for Wales.

60 min: Persico strays offside at the ruck just inside the Wales half. Stephen Jones pumps the ball into touch just short of the Italy 22.

59 min: Italy nick the ball at the back of the line-out but there's a knock-on as they try to pick it up from the base of the ruck. Scrum to Wales on halfway.

59 min: Italy go short from the line-out and look to make ground down the blind side. Troncon clears downfield but Rhys Williams is there quickly. Canale is covering well though, but he's forced over the touchline by Parker.

58 min: Wales go short to Cockbain and get the drive on, but Italy are there in numbers and force it over the touchline.

57 min: Italy are recycling the ball superbly until Charvis scrapes it back on the Wales side. It's worked out to Mark Jones on the left flank and he kicks and goes. The Italy full-back gathers well but he's forced over the touchline.

56 min: Italy win the line-out ball and get the drive on well into the Wales half. The Welsh regroup and hold it steady on their own 10m line.

56 min: Peel is off, with Gareth Cooper replaces him at scrum-half.

55 min: Harris slices the penalty horribly wide.

54 min: The Italians make an elementary error in returning a kick as two players collide and the ball is coughed forward. Wales work it wide and the penalty comes as Mark Jones is floored by a late tackle.

53 min: Wales work the ball through the backs and Harris takes them to the Italy 10 line. Stephen Jones hoists the 'bomb' and the Italians just manage to scrape it back on their side. Wakarua pumps it downfield and a kicking battle ensues.

52 min: Sidoli is immediately into the action at the line-out. He wins it and Stephen Jones chips one down into Italian territory down the right.

52 min: Italy bring Matthew Phillips into the fray for Carlo Checchinato.

51 min: Stephen Jones replaces Sweeney, with Robert Sidoli on for Llewellyn.

50 min: PENALTY - WAKARUA. The Italy fly-half makes no mistake.

49 min: Italy recycle the ball through several phases but their attack falters. The referee has spotted Daffyd Jones failing to roll away from a tackle in back play, and it's pulled back for the penalty to Italy just outside the Wales 22.

48 min: Festuccia's first line-out throw is a good one - he finds his man at the back of the line. Wales almost turn it over, but Wakarua is able to hoist the 'bomb'. Rhys Williams does enough to get it back on the Welsh side but then fails to find touch.

47 min: Italy bring Carlo Festuccia on for Fabio Ongaro.

46 min: Wales get a good steady scrum but take the wrong decision by working the blind side. Italy turn it over but a poor kick by Canale is well gathered. Jenkins has obstructed the kicker, though, so it's Italy's penalty and they can clear their lines.

45 min: Peel makes good ground for Wales after they win the line-out. Parker then bursts through a tackle to force Wales into the Italy 22. The advantage is coming, so Wales opt to spin it wide. Sweeney passes behind Martyn Williams, though, so it's pulled back for a knock-on in back play.

45 min: Mauro Bergamasco is on for Italy with Persico in the blood bin.

44 min: Italy win the line-out albeit a little scrappily. They can't make a break, though, and Mazzucato is forced over the touchline by McBryde. It'll be Wales' throw at the line-out.

43 min: Wakarua kicks the restart back with interest towards Rhys Williams. He hacks downfield, but the ball just runs in-goal. A kicking battle ensues, with Sweeney the man to find touch.

42 min: PENALTY - WAKARUA. Wakarua steps up and slots over the penalty.

41 min: Wales are penalises for losing their bindings in the scrum. Penalty to Italy just past the Wales 10m line. Wakarua will go for the posts.

41 min: Italy manage to snaffle the restart back on their own side and do enough to convince the referee that they should get the put-in.

HT: Italy 9 Wales 20.

40 min: Sweeney finds his touch down the right after the restart is flicked into his hands. Italy win the line-out through Dellape and work it wide. Masi comes through on the crash ball and presents it well for his forwards. The attack falters on the edge of the Wales 22 and the referee awards a scrum to Italy. That's half-time, though, so there will be no time to take it.

39 min: CONVERSION - HARRIS. Harris converts with ease.

38 min: TRY - PARKER. This time, Wales do manage to nick the line-out ball. Sweeney makes a marvellous break onto a tricky pass and Martyn Williams is there to link it up nicely. It's out to Harris and on to Parker, who goes over for Wales' second try.

38 min: Wales almost manage to spoil Italy's line-out, but there's been an infringement and Wakarua finds touch down the left with the penalty.

37 min: Wales work it out to the right but Sonny Parker is forced over the touchline by three or four Italians and it'll be their throw at the line-out.

37 min: Good clean ball from both the scrum and the next phase from Wales. Charvis goes on the burst but there's no support and Italy turn it over all too easily. Canale kicks down Rhys Williams' throat and he is able to bring it forward and keep it well for Wales.

36 min: Italy win their own line-out ball but it's a scrum to Wales as Santiago Dellape knocks on.

35 min: Rhys Williams makes up for his earlier error by finding a good touch down the right with a grubber kick. Italy pinned back inside their own 22, although they do have the throw.

34 min: Sloppy line-out ball for Italy and Adam Jones is able to power forward and get hold of the ball. Martin Castrogiovanni is high with his tackle on his fellow prop, and the referee pings him. Sweeney fails to find touch, though, and Canale punishes him to return play back into the Wales half.

33 min: Sweeney opts for a long restart and it's worked into the arms of Wakarua. He fails to find touch, though, but Rhys Williams' return kick goes straight into touch. Another basic error from Wales.

32 min: PENALTY - WAKARUA. Wakarua slots over the penalty.

31 min: Having recycled the ball 14 or 15 times without making much progress, the penalty comes to Italy as Wales are penalised for pulling down the maul 10 metres from their own tryline.

30 min: Wales knock on from the restart and Italy are gifted the ball back. They get the drive on into the Wales 22 before it's spun into the backs. They make more ground and Troncon this time opts to use his forwards for the hard yards.

29 min: PENALTY - HARRIS. Lo Cicero's indiscipline is costly for Italy as Harris bisects the posts.

28 min: Wales win the line-out and work it out to the right before coming back inside. Peel runs a great line and comes around on the loop behind Llewellyn to take Wales into the Italy 22. Andrea Lo Cicero is a mile offside at the ruck, though, and is penalised by the referee.

27 min: There's a little bit of afters in the ruck after Wakarua kicks it downfield into touch. The referee is right on the spot and has a little word with the forwards before letting play continue.

27 min: PENALTY - WAKARUA. After a lengthy delay while Jones leaves the field, Wakarua steps up and slots over the penalty.

26 min: Duncan Jones is having to be stretchered off after picking up an injury in the ruck. Gethin Jenkins is the man to come on for the big prop.

25 min: Italy are able to get the ball back on their side from the restart and a few holes are appearing in the Wales defence around the ruck. Italy's attack falters and ther referee calls play back to the centre of the pitch where Duncan Jones has been penalised for holding on in the tackle.

25 min: PENALTY - HARRIS. Harris makes it two from two from the kicking tee to push Wales seven points clear.

24 min: Sweeney bursts to the verge of the Italy 22 and as Wales try to recycle the ball, there's a deliberate knock on from the Italians. Penalty to Wales just outside the Italy 22. Harris will go for the posts.

23 min: Rhys Williams is on at full-back with Morgan finally falling foul of the knee injury he picked up a while back.

22 min: Wales try to control the scrum, but they've been spun and Italy are able to gather as the ball comes flying out the side. As Italy's attack falters, Wakarua decides to kick ahead. Gareth Thomas returns it with interest and a huge tackle from the experienced winger as he chases his own kick forces Parisse over the line for a Wales line-out.

21 min: Masi sends a grubber kick forward but Wales gather it easily. It's turned back over to Italy though and they recycle it well yet again. Eventually it comes out to the right but Harris is able to get a foot in and fly-kick ahead. Canale tracks back to dive on the ball and as it's flicked from Aaron Persico to Masi, it's spilt forward. Good defensive work from Wales.

20 min: Parisse wins the ball in the line-out, even though Wales have too many men in the line-out. Free-kick to Italy which is tapped quickly.

19 min: Harris pumps the ball deep into Italian territory, moving play from inside his own 22 with a fine kick down the right.

19 min: After recycling it through four or five phases, Dallan flicks the ball forwards to Sergio Parisse in the line. Scrum down, Wales' put-in.

18 min: Wakarua hits the post with his penalty and Gareth Llewellyn has to be alert to gather it first. He hacks ahead but Italy bring it right back into the Wales 22 with Nicola Mazzucato at the heart of things.

17 min: Italy win the line-out and work it to De Rossi on the charge. He presents it for Wakarua, who chips ahead towards Morgan, who appears to be moving more freely now. Sweeney has been pulled back for a high tackle, though, so it's another penalty to Italy on the Wales 10m line.

16 min: Wales lose valuable line-out ball and show their frustration with Cockbain conceding a penalty at the subsequent ruck. Wakarua finds a good touch inside the Wales half.

15 min: Sweeney hoists a marvellous kick into Italian territory and Dallan can only shepherd it out of play with his feet. Wales' line-out on the Italy 10m line.

14 min: Italy work the blind side of the scrum but there's a little knock-on from Stoica as Charvis puts the pressure on him in broken play. Italy get the shove on too early at the scrum and it's a free-kick to Wales.

14 min: Morgan is writhing in agony in the Wales in-goal area. He looks in all sorts of pain and is hobbling out of the action by the looks of things.

13 min: Italy work the ball well to their overlap on the right after a great burst from Andrea Masi. Dallan is the man there wide out and he bursts to within a metre of the line. Wales' defence holds firm, though, although there's been a little knock-on in the ruck from a Welsh hand. Scrum to Italy five metres out.

12 min: Italy get good clean ball from the scrum but their initial burst gets them just a couple of metres forward. Wales turn it over well in midfield and Sweeney kicks ahead. It's half-charged down and again Canale is the man there.

11 min: Peel picks up and kicks ahead from the restart but fails to find touch with Denis Dallan gathering it. Italy's attack falters and they opt to kick ahead. Morgan returns the kick, again failing to find touch. Canale hoists a 'bomb' which Robin McBryde allows to bounce. He then knocks on, so it'll be Italy's put-in.

10 min: CONVERSION - HARRIS. Harris converts from out on the Wales left.

9 min: TRY - MARK JONES. Charvis powers on around the side of the scrum before he is pulled down. Wales work it out through the backs through a couple of phases. There's men over on the left and that's the side Wales work. Great hands from Martyn Williams in the line propels it out to Mark Jones and he powers over.

8 min: Andrea de Rossi knocks on as Italy try to run out the restart. Scrum down, Wales put-in inside the Italy 22.

7 min: PENALTY - WAKARUA. Wakarua punishes Charvis' ill discipline by coolly slotting his first place-kick between the posts.

6 min: Italy win the line-out ball and burst to within five metres of the Welsh line. The penalty comes to Italy with Colin Charvis caught offside at the ruck.

5 min: Poor passing from the Wales half-backs and Iestyn Harris has to kick ahead. Canale is there and kicks himself. Sweeney gathers but is forced over the touchline by a great chase from the Italian backline.

4 min: Italy win the line-out but Alessandro Stoica, the naturalised Italian, knocks on in midfield to gift Wales the put-in at the scrum.

3 min: Italy transgress at the scrum, conceding a free-kick and Wales look to get an expansive game going by spinning it wide to the backs. They make little progress and Sweeney opts to kick ahead. Canale is there, kicking downfield to Morgan. He gathers well and kicks himself, finding a good touch around halfway.

2 min: Wales get the turn on the scrum and take it far enough to get their own put-in.

2 min: Good line-out ball for Wales with Brent Cockbain climbing highest. Italy appear to have got the turn over, indeed it's been knocked on at the ruck by the Welsh.

1 min: Rima Wakarua and Kevin Morgan trade kicks before Gonzolo Canale intervenes, finding a great touch for Italy down the right.

0 min: Wales get the game under way with Sweeney opting for a deep one with his first kick of the game.

Pre-match: Wales coach Steve Hansen has rung the changes in the front row with props Adam Jones and namesake Duncan coming in. Ceri Sweeney and Dwayne Peel come in to form a new half-back pairing. Italy have captain Alessandro Troncon and centre Andrea Masi in their side after both recovered from injuries, but Marco Bortolami, Manuel Dallan and Mirco Bergamasco are missing.
