Called into the 30-man squad after the departure of first Gcobani Bobo and then Jean de Villiers, van der Westhuyzen must consider himself somewhat fortunate.
Having picked up a knee injury against Australia in July, he failed to do enough to earn a place in the initial squad despite recovering prior to the deadline.
Since, though, he has returned to action for Blue Bulls and his versatility - he is able to play at both full-back and fly-half - earnt him the late call into the squad.
