One of a handful of foreign-born players in the squad, Peens hails from South Africa and qualifies for Italy through the residency rule.
The 29-year-old made his debut as recently as last March - against Wales - and the fact he has won 14 caps in just 18 months shows his importance to the team.
Likely to feature in the main at either centre or full-back, but Peens is tactically aware enough to do a professional job at fly-half.
