GERALD MERCERON

Born: 2.02.73
Height: 5ft 9in
Weight: 11st 9lb
Position: Fly-half
Club: Montferrand
Caps: 26
Points: 252

Merceron was the driving force behind France's success in the 2002 Six Nations with his brilliant kicking game and elusive running.

His form was so good that he beat Jonny Wilkinson into the 2002 International Team of the Year, the only player from 2001 to retain his place.

Merceron was the top-points scorer in the 2002 Six Nations with 80 in his five games - but suffered a dip in form once the tournament was over.

His place in the French side is now under threat - unthinkable last March - as he struggles with his kicking game but he has vowed to fight on.

Merceron was back for the final autumn internationals and will be looking to rule the world.

If his kicking game stands up to the pressure, Wilkinson and co will all have to go some to eclipse their rival number 10.
