Picture Hayes - fierce competitor.

JOHN HAYES

Born: 02.11.73
Height: 6ft 4in
Weight: 19st
Position: Prop
Club: Munster
Caps: 34
Points: 5

Hayes did not begin his rugby career until the age of 18 but in 1998 - just seven years later - was called into the Ireland Senior squad for the first time for the summer tour to South Africa.

Despite not appearing in any of the Tests, he gained valuable experience in the midweek matches.

In November of that year he was in the Ireland side to face South Africa in Ravenhill but it was the 2000 Six Nations that marked his breakthrough, with a string of impressive displays meaning he was one of the first names on the team-sheet.

He has been a regular ever since with his fierce competitive spirit and fighting qualities a key component of the Irish squad.
