Petrie first came to prominence as a member of the Scotland Under-21 side in the late 1990s where his powerful performances in the pack caught the eye.
At that stage he was playing his club rugby in France with Colomiers, but he returned to Dundee High School FP later that year before graduating to professional rugby – with Glasgow in 1999.
His reward for a fine debut season with Glasgow was soon forthcoming when he was promoted into the full Scotland squad and he has gone on to win 22 caps at full international level, remaining a valuable member of Ian McGeechan's set-up.
