Having made his Scotland debut in 1999, the hard-running Auckland-born back burst to the public's attention in his first full international season.
Metcalfe won the Famous Grouse Player of the Season for 1999-2000 and was rewarded with a place on the tour to New Zealand, but injury restricted him to only one outing.
He was eventually out of international action for 17 months after a series of niggling injuries, but after a spell in the A team - who he captained last year - he is finally back to his best as he showed on the tour of South Africa.
