A mobile, ball-playing prop, McIlwham gained a grounding for international rugby in the Scotland A team, who he helped to the shadow Grand Slam in 1998.
He broke into the senior squad later that season but has struggled to break into the first XV on a regular basis, making just 15 appearances in five years.
His first start came against Ireland in the lead-up to the World Cup, but before that he had made just one Test appearance in two years.
