The World Cup will be the undoubted high point of what has been a rollercoaster international career for Hines.

Hailing from Wagga Wagga in Australia, he made his debut with the Scotland senior side on the summer tour of New Zealand in 2000 just 24 hours after receiving a late call into the squad.

His early performances showed much promise but his career was put on hold when he needed surgery after badly damaging cruciate ligaments in late 2000.

He returned afresh for the 2001-02 season and quickly forced his way back into the international reckoning, scoring his first Scotland try against the USA in the 65-23 victory.

But it was a bitter-sweet occasion for the lock as he was sent off in first-half injury-time for aiming a punch at Dan Anderson.

Hines was then relegated to A team action but has since returned to the senior squad, and was named man of the match against South Africa earlier this year.

A former rugby league player in his native Australia, the towering lock is an abrasive figure who is happy both in attack and defence.
