Called up to make his Test debut just short of his 22nd birthday, Smith plays for the Cats in the Super 12 competition and has represented the South Africa U21 and A teams.
A hard-working forward, Smith came to prominence in the U21 World Cup, scoring three tries in five outings.
Used as a substitute for much of the season by the Cats, remarkably he had little interest in rugby a few years ago, and didn't even play the game in 2000.
A year later though he got a game at Free State University, and the same season made the provincial U21 side.
With a preference for a role of blindside flanker, Smith's six Test appearances have all come in 2003 and he looks set to add to them in Australia.
