JOHN SMIT

Born: 03.04.78
Height: 6ft 1in
Weight: 18st 3lb
Position: Hooker
Club: Sharks
Caps: 21
Points: 5

A former prop who now plays in the hooking role, the last of Smit's 21 Test matches came back in December 2001 against the United States.

He made his debut in June 2000 against Canada, and is a true all-rounder as he displays good defence, runs well with the ball, has a good work-rate and shows some deft touches with the ball in hand.

The youngest player to represent the Natal U21 side, he is a former national U21 skipper who plays his Super 12 rugby for the Sharks, where he is the skipper.

Such is his standing in the game that he was mentioned as a possible skipper for the World Cup squad, but after finally recovering from a long-term shoulder injury only to be ruled out of the Tri-Nations squad with a hamstring injury, he will be only too happy to make the squad.
