Zambian-born Krige started his Test career in style, as not only did his team defeat Italy 101-0 in June 1999, but he was also chosen as skipper.
Injury meant he missed the 1999 World Cup, but he came back and has been a regular ever since, taking over the captaincy when current coach Rudolf Straueli was appointed in June 2002.
A player who never gives less than 100%, he is renowned in world rugby for being one of the biggest hitters in the game, and there are few more durable players around.
He started out in the Super 12 competition with Western Province in 1996, and was picked for the South African U21 and A teams the same year.
No stranger to controversy, he was the skipper in South Africa's hammering at the hands of England at Twickenham last year, and this year was accused by Wallaby coach Eddie Jones of spitting.
But he can put all that behind him in Australia by helping his country to World Cup victory.
