DERICK HOUGAARD

Born: 04.01.83
Height: 5ft 8in
Weight: 13st 7lb
Position: Fly-half
Club: Bulls
Caps: 0
Points: 0

A goal-kicking fly-half with huge potential, Hougaard plays for Super 12 side the Bulls and is one of four uncapped players in South Africa's squad.

His Blue Bulls coach Heyneke Meyer rates him so highly he says he can become the best fly-half the world has seen, but although the 20-year-old seems unlikely to get too much game time at this World Cup, rumours in South Africa suggest that Springboks coach Rudolf Straueli could be holding him back for the tournament.

However the fact he has been ignored by the national selectors, and only played in one full game in the Super 12 series, seems to suggest that he is on this trip as a learning experience.

Played in the U21 World Cup earlier this year in England, in which South Africa finished fourth, but played second-fiddle to Francois Swart as coach Jake White was reportedly unhappy with his fitness levels.
