John Botha, known as 'Bakkies', made headlines for the wrong reason this year when he was suspended for eight weeks for 'deliberately attacking the face' of Wallaby hooker Brendan Cannon.

When that incident came to light, Scotland skipper Bryan Redpath then accused the South African of trying to bite him in a match played a few months earlier. Neither incident left the huge forward in an especially good light.

He made his Test debut in November 2002 against France after some impressive performances for the Bulls in the Super 12 series, where his mobility shone.

A former SA U19 and A team player, he is a powerful man and if he can keep away from any more disciplinary incidents seems set for a bright future.

Although he missed South Africa's last Test through suspension for the Cannon incident, he remains a key part of the squad for his scrimmaging power.
