Although Burke had been Australia's number one full-back since 1995, he looks now to be struggling for a place in the starting line-up, falling behind Joe Roff and Chris Latham in the pecking order.
A key member of the Wallabies' World Cup-winning team in 1999, Burke's national representation began in 1990 when he toured the UK and Ireland with the undefeated Australian Schoolboys team, and followed that with selection in the Australian Under-21s and Sevens teams in 1992 and 1993.
Shortly afterwards he won his first cap with the Wallabies, making his Test debut as a replacement against South Africa in 1993.
Since then he has gone on to amass 851 points in 72 Tests, a tally helped by 26 tries, 172 penalties, 101 conversions and a drop goal.
But his last Test outing saw him come on as a replacement in the wing position as he replaced the injured Wendell Sailor in the loss to New Zealand at Eden Park, and with Elton Flatley taking over the kicking duties he is likely to be used off the bench in the World Cup.
Although he is Australia's most capped full-back, Burke's best hopes of a World Cup spot seem to be grabbing a spot in the centres.
