A specialist open-side flanker, 24-year-old Scholtz is a former national Schools, U21, U23 and A team representative.
He made his senior debut against Australia in July 2002, impressing when he came on in the first half for Corne Krige, but has yet to start a Test match.
A hard-working forward, his three Test outings all came last year.
He made two Super 12 appearances for the Bulls before switching to the Cats, and his ability to play on either side of the scrum makes him a key member of the squad.
Boasting similarities with former New Zealand great Josh Kronfeld in both looks and playing style, Scholtz is unlikely to see too much game time in Australia.
