Tonga skipper Afeaki played four seasons with the Hurricanes in the Super 12 competition.
After a stint with the Ricoh club in Japan he moved back to New Zealand in 1998 to play for Wellington.
That brought him a call-up to the Hurricanes squad, but he turned down the offer of playing for them this season to move back to Japan where he currently plays with Secom.
This will be the third World Cup for Afeaki, as he made his Test debut against France in the 1995 competition.
His father Etuate also played for Tonga, while his brother Stanley is also in the squad.
