GEORGE GREGAN

Born: 19.04.73
Height: 5ft 7in
Weight: 12st 4lb
Position: Scrum-half
Club: ACT Brumbies
Caps: 89
Points: 71

The Wallabies skipper, Zambian-born Gregan migrated to Australia with his parents at a young age and made his Test debut against Italy in early 1994.

Later that same year he made THAT tackle on All Black Jeff Wilson in the Bledisloe Cup Test, saving the game for Australia in what has become one of the most famous moments in world rugby.

Gregan was made Wallabies vice-captain in 1997, and starred in Australia's World Cup triumph of 1999, as well as helping the home side down the touring British and Irish Lions in 2001.

When John Eales retired in 2001 Gregan was the obvious choice to replace the giant forward, especially as the same year he took out an award as the 'International Players' Association Player of the Year'.

The diminutive scrum-half has been under increasing pressure during Australia's run of recent defeats, with both his general play and captaincy criticised, but the 2003 Rugby World Cup gives him the ideal opportunity to silence the knockers – especially if he is the one lifting the trophy Webb Ellis trophy aloft on Saturday November 22 at Telstra Stadium.
