One of Scotland's most talented players over the last 20 years, Townsend is also reaching the twilight of a long career which has included a spell in France.
He first pulled on the blue shirt back in 1993 and became his country's most-capped player when he appeared against Wales at the end of the 2002 Six Nations.
A British Lion and talisman for the Scottish team for nearly a decade, Townsend is not a certain starter in the No 10 shirt.
However his versatility, he can also operate at centre, and proven big-match temperament mean he will still have a key role to play for Ian McGeechan's side.
His experience will be invaluable as the shrewd coach looks to rebuild Scotland as an international force, something Townsend has almost single-handedly been achieving in recent years.
