Ireland's inspirational skipper underwent seven shoulder operations during a long 11 months on the sidelines but is now back for what is likely to be one last hurrah.

After all his devotion to the Irish cause over the years, hooker Wood deserves one final crack at the World Cup.

He has been integral part of the Irish squad ever since he made his debut against Australia in June 1994.

He captained his country for the first time against Australia in November 1996 and played in 39 of their next 46 games.

His main strength is his mobility around the park and he is often one of the first men at each breakdown.

He is also not afraid to use his boot and has scored many a point from a drop goal.

As well as playing for Ireland, 'Woody' has also enjoyed a successful Lions career, and has played five tests, two against South Africa and three against Australia.

If he can rekindle the spirit and performances of 2001 and 2002, Ireland can give any side a run for their money.
