WALES v ITALY MIN-BY-MIN

By Reece Killworth

RESULT: WALES 44 ITALY 10

80 min: Penalty to Wales as Italy are pinged at the scrum. Sweeney pumps the ball into touch on halfway and the referee calls an end to proceedings. Hansen's men have ended his coaching reign with a six-try mauling of the Italians.

80 min: Ben Evans replaces Duncan Jones.

80 min: Wales bring Robert Sidoli on for Owen, who appears to have picked up a knock.

79 min: Free-kick to Italy as Wales transgress at the scrum. They tap and go quickly but find Wales' scrambling defence too hard to breach. The knock-on comes and it'll be Wales' put-in.

78 min: De Marigny makes a nice break with an arcing run out to the right. He has support there but Davies is in quickly to turn the ball over. Griffen does likewise for Italy and the scrum goes the way of the Italians. Both sets of forwards appear to be out on their feet.

78 min: Fatigue is beginning to show now as both sides knock on.

77 min: Wales bring Alix Popham on as Iestyn Harris is confirmed as the man of the match.

76 min: Bergamasco makes a great burst for Italy, moving them to within 10 metres of the Wales tryline. He holds on in the tackle, though, and Sweeney finds touch with the penalty.

75 min: Italy are still coming forward and for that they deserve great credit. The difference in class is clear though - Wales are puncturing holes in the Italy defence when they come forward but the men in blue are struggling to find a gap. Indeed the ball is turned over by Davies and Charvis of all people pumps the ball into touch down the left.

74 min: Italy bring Simon Picone on for Masi and Mirco Bergamasco is also into the fray.

74 min: Wales bring McBryde, Cooper and Stephen Jones off. Ceri Sweeney, Dwayne Peel and Mefin Davies are the men to come on for the last six mintues.

73 min: Wales turn the ball over up front but they've done so illegally. Penalty to Italy around 25 metres out in front of the posts. De Marigny pumps the ball into touch down the left.

72 min: Jenkins gets in a huge tackle to halt an initial burst from the Italians, although they do manage to keep the ball and come again.

71 min: CONVERSION - STEPHEN JONES. Stephen Jones adds the extras.

70 min: TRY - RHYS WILLIAMS. There's no stopping the Welsh at present. This time Rhys Williams is the man with the glory of crossing the line after great work from both forwards and backs. A real team try finished in trademark fashion.

69 min: Wales are looking dangerous every time they come forward and the Italians are scrambling defensively.

68 min: CONVERSION - STEPHEN JONES. Stephen Jones adds the extras.

67 min: TRY - SHANE WILLIAMS. Wales get clean ball from the scrum and work it wide to the right. Shane Williams, across from the left flank, is the man on the end of the line and there is no stopping him from close range.

66 min: Martyn Williams takes the ball at the back of the line and his fellow forwards are quick to support him. The ball is worked wide to the left and Charvis picks up and goes. He gets to within a metre and the put-in goes to Wales as the ball gets held up in the ruck.

65 min: Wales turn the ball over up front and Italy stray offside at a subsequent ruck. Stephen Jones hoists the ball into touch down the right, pinning Italy back behind their own five metre line.

64 min: Thomas scents another try as he bursts down the right but his kick over the top goes too far and Italy bring it clear.

63 min: CONVERSION - WAKARUA. Wakarua has taken over the kicking duties and he slots over the conversion.

62 min: TRY - MASI. Italy get their rolling maul going from a line-out deep in Welsh territory. They get to within a metre before moving it through the backs. Phase two is the crucial one as they get the space out wide and Masi is able to cut in to score.

61 min: CONVERSION - STEPHEN JONES. Routine stuff for the fly-half.

60 min: TRY - SHANKLIN. Within 30 seconds of coming onto the field, Shanklin goes in unchallenged for a try as Wales work the ball superbly through midfield before freeing the replacement.

59 min: Italy bring Salvatore Perugini on for Castrogiovanni while Wales replace Harris, who has been superb, with Tom Shanklin.

58 min: Wales tap and go through Cooper but Italy manage to turn it over. The ruck forms and Wales are caught offside, allowing De Marigny to pump the ball into touch down the left.

57 min: The try has visibly lifted Wales. This time Cooper comes from the restart and takes play to the brink of the Italy 22. They recycle and the crowd roars on their approval. The penalty comes as Lo Cicero is caught offside.

56 min: CONVERSION - STEPHEN JONES. Stephen Jones adds the extras.

55 min: TRY - THOMAS. Charvis does superbly to cling onto the ball at the back of the line-out despite going down on his back. Wales manage to recycle the ball cleanly and work it through midfield. Thomas has little more than a half-chance but he opts to go for the line and holds off two Italians to score. It's a landmark try for Thomas - his 34th for Wales, breaking Ieuan Evans' record.

54 min: The scrum goes down and Wales are pinged. Italy tap and go from the free-kick but spill it forward up front presenting the ball back to Wales. They work it left and right probing for a gap and eventually find it out on the right where Charvis is able to make 10 metres. The ball comes back but Canale is right in Cooper's face and manages to get a hand on the ball. Wales' line-out.

54 min: Wales win the ball on their own throw but the ball in wasn't straight. Scrum to Italy.

54 min: Stephen Jones takes play into the Italy half by hoisting the ball into touch as the men in blue bring Rima Wakarua on for Dallan.

53 min: Marco Bortolami scrambles the ball back on the Italy side from the line-out as Wales' set-piece begins to malfunction. The penalty comes to Wales eventually, though, as Dellape holds on in the tackle.

52 min: De Rossi gathers the restart and takes play back to halfway. Italy work the ball to De Marigny and he finds touch down the left on the Wales 22.

51 min: De Marigny just fails to find the target with his kick.

50 min: Wales transgress at the line-out. Italy tap and go from the free-kick and draw the penalty as Duncan Jones is pinged two metres inside the Wales half. De Marigny is going for goal.

49 min: A kicking exchange ends with De Rossi carrying it forward into contact. Wales manage to turn it over up front, though, and Thomas slices the ball into touch on halfway.

48 min: Stephen Jones again misses the target, with his kick drifting to the left-hand side of the posts.

47 min: Penalty to Wales as Italy transgress from the restart. Stephen Jones is going for the posts from eight or so metres inside the Italy half.

46 min: De Marigny's kick slides to the left-hand side of the post.

45 min: Wales take too long to get the ball in and the referee awards a free-kick to Italy. De Marigny opts to pump it into touch but Rhys Williams is there to take it quickly. He finds Thomas who powers forward. Italy have men there and Thomas clings on on the floor. Penalty to Italy and they are going for goal.

45 min: Wales win the line-out and work it through midfield where Charvis is positioned to carry it forward to halfway. Wales recycle well and Stephen Jones sends an angled kick down the right. De Marigny is able to keep it in but is hurried into hacking the ball into touch. Wales' line-out just outside the Italy 22.

44 min: De Marigny is on hand to gather the restart and pumps it into touch down the right around halfway. A good minute for the Italy fly-half.

43 min: PENALTY - DE MARIGNY. De Marigny slots over the penalty to put Italy on the board.

42 min: Italy win the line-out and hoist a kick over the top. Thomas covers the kick but can't gather it at the first attempt. Fortunately for Wales, Taylor is there to cover and the men in red do eventually take it clear. Charvis fumbles on his own 22 and as Italy turn it over, they earn a kickable penalty and the chance to score their first points.

41 min: Wales initially gather the restart but Carlo Antonio Del Fava scrambles it back. Just as Italy look to get with him, he spills it back into a Welsh hand and Harris is able to hoist the ball into touch down the left.

40 min: Italy get the second half under way.

HT: Wales 16 Italy 0.

40 min: Italy are unable to do anything with the ball and when Wales turn it over, Dellape is offside. Stephen Jones hoists the penalty into the crowd to end the half.

40 min: Wales gather the restart and Thomas marauds forward down the right. Again, he has little support with him when he is tackled and Italy are able to turn it over.

39 min: Llewellyn gathers the ball safely in the middle of the line and Wales work it through midfield before Harris kicks ahead. De Marigny kicks poorly in return but Rhys Williams can't punish him as his kick travels too far and allows Griffen to touch down behind his own line.

38 min: Italy win line-out ball but Griffen's kick downfield screws away from the touchline and Thomas is able to carry it forward. He has little support with him, though, and Italy turn it over. Griffen chips the ball in behind and it drifts out of play for a Wales line-out inside their own 22.

37 min: Martin Castrogiovanni's head pops out of the scrum, but Duncan Jones has driven him up illegally so De Marigny is able to hoist the ball into touch down the Italy right.

36 min: Persico is heading for the blood bin yet again with his eye looking worse by the minute. Orlando is back on.

35 min: Wales turn the ball over up front with Charvis to the fore yet again. They recycle it quickly and cleanly and work it out wide to Mark Taylor. He dives for the line but Canale does superbly to knock the ball out of his hands as he tries to touch down.

34 min: Italy win line-out ball and work it out wide to Dallan. He makes 10 metres but then Masi can't cling on in the tackle. Wales take a quick line-out and Harris takes play to the brink of the Italy 22 before spilling the ball.

33 min: Wales do the basics right yet again. Charvis gathers the restart, Wales work it to Stephen Jones and he finds his touch just inside the Italy half.

32 min: Stephen Jones fails to add the extras.

31 min: TRY - RHYS WILLIAMS. Wales win quick ball from the scrum and Cooper runs around to the blind side before flicking it out to Thomas. He draws a tackle and finds Rhys Williams who turns on the afterburners to touch down in the corner.

30 min: Italy win the line-out again and get the shove on up front. As Wales get a foothold, Italy opt to move it wide but Dallan knocks on under huge pressure. The referee tries to give Wales the advantage, but has to call it back as Italy reclaim possession.

29 min: Italy win the line-out on the Welsh throw and the penalty comes to the men in blue as Wales stray offside at the subsequent ruck. Sloppy play from the hosts allowing De Marigny to find touch around halfway.

28 min: Santiago Dellape claims the line-out ball but Italy cough it up straight back to Wales. They work it out wide to the left and Thomas bursts forward on the end of the line. He is held up within a metre of a record-breaking try and the penalty comes as Wales try to recycle. Stephen Jones dinks the ball into touch and it's Wales' line-out five metres from the Italy tryline.

27 min: With Canale downfield, Stephen Jones spots a gap over the top and pumps the ball into touch inside the Italian 22. Pressure on.

27 min: Llewellyn gathers the restart and makes 10 metres alone before working it through the backs. Stephen Jones fails to find touch but Canale opts to kick ahead in return and Wales are able to regather the ball.

26 min: Stephen Jones misses his second successive kick, allowing his conversion attempt to drift across the posts.

25 min: TRY - SHANE WILLIAMS. Wales win the line-out ball and Cooper opts to hoist a kick over the top. Griffen shows lovely hands to keep the ball alive but Masi pushes it forward and Wales can come forward. Suddenly Rhys Williams bursts forward in trademark fashion but is hauled down just three metres from the line. Italy slow the ball up but Wales are able to eventually work it wide. Shane Williams has two men outside but opts to go for the line and gets it down despite the presence of two Italians.

24 min: McBryde is able to take his place in the scrum but the Wales front row are penalised and Italy get the free-kick. They work the ball to De Marigny and he finds touch with a clever kick down the right.

23 min: McBryde is down receiving treatment.

22 min: Daffyd Jones and Charvis make ground for Wales and manage to keep the ball alive. McBryde then has his chance to keep the attack going with three men outside but his basketball-style pass goes forward and it's Italy's put-in at the scrum.

21 min: Stephen Jones opts to go from the posts from a shade under 49 metres, but his kick just fades to the left. Persico is back on for Orlando with the Leeds man sporting a shiner.

20 min: A kicking exchange ensues before Charvis opts to carry the ball forward. He takes play up to halfway and has plenty of support. Wales recycle and when Andrea Lo Cicero is caught failing to roll away it is a penalty to Wales just inside the Italy half.

19 min: Italy win the line-out and work a nice scissors move in midfield. They use up a couple of advantages - one for offside and one for a high tackle - to make it into the Wales 22. De Marigny is a little too ambitious, though, and he gives the ball back to Wales.

18 min: Italy recycle the ball through a couple of phases before De Marigny opts to kick. It's a poor one and Gareth Thomas is able to gather and find a decent touch given the narrow angle.

17 min: Italy win the line-out and work it out to the left flank but Masi and Canale get themselves in a muddle and the knock-on comes from Canale. Scrum to Wales but Cooper fails to get it in straight.

17 min: Colin Charvis gathers the restart and sets the base for his fellow forwards. The ball is worked back to Stephen Jones and he sends yet another fine kick into touch, this time down the left.

16 min: PENALTY - STEPHEN JONES. The fly-half, who made the initial break, gets his reward with another three points.

16 min: Wales work a nice move off the scrum with the Jones - Stephen and Daffyd - linking well around the blind side. That takes them well over the gain line and when the ball comes back there are four or five Italians offside. Penalty to Wales and Stephen Jones is going for the posts from straight in front.

15 min: Andrea De Rossi does well to pick up and go from the base as Wales try to wheel the scrum. His efforts are wasted, though, as Masi knocks on in midfield. Wales' put-in at the scrum just inside the Italy half in a central position.

14 min: The line-out ball is overthrown by Robin McBryde and Italy nick it. They look to work it wide before coming back on the inside. Gethin Jenkins reads their intentions but just fails to cling on. Italy put-in at the scrum just inside their own half.

13 min: Wales do well to scrabble the ball back on their side at the line-out. Cooper opts to hoist a kick over the top but it's easily gathered by Canale and he brings Italy forward to halfway. Griffen opts to kick with Denis Dallan in a little space out wide, but the kick sails out on the full.

12 min: Persico disappears into the blood bin to be replaced by Silvio Orlando.

12 min: Wales gather the restart and work it to Stephen Jones, who pumps the ball into touch with a superb spiralling kick down the right.

11 min: PENALTY - STEPHEN JONES. It's a routine kick for the Wales fly-half and it's no surprise to see him bisect the posts.

11 min: Wales' forwards do the hard yards well, moving quickly around the fringes to get to within five metres of the Italy line. Persico lies on the wrong side to slow the attack and the referee pings him. Penalty to Wales and Stephen Jones is going for goal.

10 min: Wales give Griffen the hurry-up but he managers to keep his cool and find touch. It's still a good position for Wales as they take the ball on their own line-out throw.

9 min: Scrappy ball from the scrum for Wales as Italy get the shove on. Daffyd Jones tries to gather it back but it's knocked on and Italy have the put-in. A wasted chance for Wales there.

8 min: Free-kick to Wales as Italy transgress at the line-out. Gareth Cooper takes it quickly and goes and it's worked out wide to Shane Williams. He chips ahead and Paul Griffen has to get back to pump the ball over the dead-ball line into the crowd. Wales' scrum five metres out.

7 min: Wales win the ball at the line-out and a penalty comes as Aaron Persico comes in at the side of the ruck. Stephen Jones takes a step back and pumps the ball into touch down the right. Wales line-out between the Italy 22 and 10m line.

6 min: Owen is first to the ball as it drops at the line-out but Italy wrestle it back. There are men on the outside but Andrea Masi opts to kick. The ball dribbles into touch for a Wales line-out.

5 min: Good clean ball for Wales and Stephen Jones is able to hoist the ball into touch down the right, pushing the Italians back into their own half.

4 min: Scrappy ball but Italy do manage to get it back on their side at the line-out. Cristian Stoica comes on the crash ball in midfield to push Wales back five or so metres and they recycle it quickly but Wales' forwards are there to force the Italians backwards and get the put-in at the scrum.

4 min: Italy form the ruck and Martyn Williams strays offside. Penalty to Italy and De Marigny finds his touch down the Italian left.

3 min: Wales win the line-out well with Llewellyn the man picked out. They move it out to the right wing before coming back inside. Llewellyn coughs it up in the tackle, though, and Italy can get some ball in hand.

3 min: Iestyn Harris tries a little grubber kick but it's too near to Gonzalo Canale. He gathers and finds touch down the Italian right to end Wales' promising opening.

2 min: Wales are looking expansively in the early stages and are getting their rewards. They have taken play up to the Italy 22 in 10 or so phases of play.

1 min: Italy gather the restart and work it back to Roland De Marigny. He fails to find touch with his first left-footed kick and Wales are back in possession. They work it through midfield and manage to make progress despite Michael Owen dropping the ball in the line.

0 min: After the usually-passionate singing of the national anthems, Wales get the game under way on the whistle of South African referee Mark Lawrence.

Pre-match: Llewellyn is given the honour of leading the team out on his record-equalling appearance and does so to a huge ovation from the Millennium Stadium crowd.

Pre-match: Steve Hansen goes looking for a winning climax to his reign as national coach as Wales face Italy. Hansen, who is returning home to New Zealand to take up a coaching post with the All Blacks, hands lock Gareth Llewellyn his record-equalling 87th Wales cap in a match which will decide who finishes fourth in the competition.
