Man of the match on his first Test start against Wales, Barkley continues at fly-half in Paris largely due to the continuing absence of the experienced Paul Grayson.
It is a bad time to be a 23 year-old English fly-half, and Barkley must be haunted by the spectres of Stuart Barnes (and latterly Grayson himself) when he contemplates his international career prospects.
Bidding to replace Grayson as first-choice understudy to Jonny Wilkinson, if Barkley can recreate his Bath form in the international arena he will at least have given this injury-prone England side another option at stand-off.
