A relative newcomer to the England set-up, Woodman has made a smooth transition to international rugby.

From his debut on the 1999 tour of the USA to the hysteria of the World Cup win in Australia, the young pretender has sought to establish himself as the long-term successor to England's front-row talisman Jason Leonard.

He now finds himself in the strange position of a relative international novice with top-level experience that most of his opponents will never be able to access.

Having played the World Cup largely as understudy to Leonard, and as a talented new-boy in a scrum of massive ability and experience, Woodman cannot feel that he has yet to make the position his own.

Solid in the scrum and mobile in the loose, Woodman is another of the new breed of modern-day forwards.

He plays in the Six Nations campaign with something still to prove, and with Leonard heading into international retirement, he has the opportunity to ink his name indelibly onto the team-sheet.
