Lewsey had been a name on the lips of those in rugby circles for years, but burst to the attention of the nation's armchair fans in a fine display in 2003's Six Nations clash with Italy.

Replacing the injured Jason Robinson, the former Army officer crossed for two tries and was assured enough in defence to force Clive Woodward to field Robinson on the wing for the last two matches of the tournament.

This was where he ended the World Cup, making the position his own while offering the versatility of an all-round three-quarter.

Lewsey has more than just one string to his bow, and is equally happy at either centre – where his pace and vision make him a clear danger – or on the wing.

With tries in England's first two Six Nations games of the season, the Wasps man is keeping his competition for a place in the backline at arm's length.
