Along with Paul Grayson, who must step in for Jonny Wilkinson, Grewcock has the toughest job in the England side - proving there is life after Martin Johnson.
With extensive experience at the top level - though forced to play understudy to Johnson by Ben Kay's ascendancy - Grewcock had to beat off the challenge of Simon Shaw to cement his position for the tournament.
The 31-year-old, nicknamed 'Robolock' by his team-mates, moved to Bath from Saracens a couple of years ago after a frustrating campaign ruined by a groin injury.
Grewcock quickly returned to full fitness and top form and his consistency in the season before last was rewarded with the Bath captaincy, a job he admits he relishes.
His enthusiasm and workrate make him a valuable member of both the Bath and England squads and his aggressive nature usually works to his benefit.
It did work against him when he went into history as only the second England player to ever be sent off - against New Zealand back in 1998.
But the giant lock will not shy away from confrontation and if the ball is there to be won, Grewcock will go for it.
He made his debut against Argentina back in 1997 and along with Johnson formed one of the most effective second-row partnerships in the world.
If he can find a reprise to that success alongside his former rival Kay England's pack will perhaps not suffer too greviously from Johnson's departure.
